Early

Early in the morning
My eyes were open wide
As if I’d walked for hours in my sleep.
Honeydew and coconuts
Sold upon a produce truck
Wafted through my windows from the street.
I see within my memory:
A woman cries, “Oh, Henry”
Should I be made to walk home in the night?
I must have followed closely.
For though they whispered, mostly.
Every word she spoke was if I’d up and died.
All while making this sound!
Peter’s younger sisters
Made a swift impression
Displaying a collection of their art.
They stayed in their room for hours
Pressing tiny, little flowers
They’d gathered from the woods behind the park.
They’d set out every morning
On each wrist a wicker basket,
Skipping with the dew upon their feet.
To all the lords and ladies
chamomile and daisies.
They heralded their song all down the street.
All while making this sound!
Colin was a poet
Who knew a lot of things
But still remained confounded by his fate.
He set out every morning
In search of his lost family
And arrived in every town a day too late.
Now he’s sleeping in a phone booth
Somewhere in Midland, Texas
The yellow pages draped across his face.
He’s gossiped with the mothers
And finally discovered
His kin have disappeared without a trace.
All while making this sound!

Poolside
03:07
|
|||
Dried up city,
Thirsty mouth.
We packed one bag
And started out.
You drove first
’Til you got tired.
We stopped for joe
To keep me wired.
So much for California…
Any state will do.
Poolside in the summer,
Hours wasted dreaming,
We get hungry every night,
Power when we’re sinking.
The pantry is empty
The shower leaks
I haven’t seen a stranger
In three weeks.
We had a vision
And wrote it down
Old indecision
Sulks around.
So much for California
Now any state will do
We need…
Poolside in the summer,
Hours wasted dreaming,
We get hungry every night,
Power when we’re sinking.
They don’t make denim how they used to, honey.
We’ll have to turn back someday, won’t we?
We’ve been going since who knows when.
No, I don’t think I do.
I don’t think.
I do.
Poolside in the summer,
Hours wasted dreaming,
We get hungry every night,
Power when we’re sinking.

Sister
03:30
|
|||
I can’t find time to see my family.
It ain’t nothing special, I just get lost in the days.
Maybe I could take off on a Friday
And make the drive down to the old country place.
Back down to Birmingham
Montgomery, to a man
Wide open country
I get lost in loam
Why did I go so far from home?
Sister’s gonna drive up from Atlanta.
She saved her pennies watching the kids after school.
She bought a peck of peaches from the farm in Alabama,
We froze them into smoothies and we laid by the pool.
Back down to Birmingham (I don’t have love for the governor)
Montgomery, to a man (Made a phone call to my brother)
If you’ve got family in a place you’re from
Why did you go so far from home?
Me and sister gonna make a chutney.
We ain’t gonna go out tonight.
We chopped cherries and jalapeños
Me and sister gonna do it right
Grab a bite in Phenix City,
Spend the night out in the country,
Wild dogs crying when the stars come on.
Why did I go so far from home?

Worry
04:54
|

Creature of habit,
Stuck in my ways,
A reckless rabbit with my foot in a trap.
Creature of habit,
Searching for gold,
I need something my hands can’t hold.
Wake up in a frenzy,
Pass out when I’m crushed
I get nervous from time to time,
But I don’t ever worry much.
I don’t ever worry
I don’t ever worry
I don’t ever worry much.
I don’t ever worry
I don’t ever worry
I don’t ever worry much.
Creature of habit,
I love only you.
Forget the traffic with no curious eyes.
Creature of habit,
If you number my days,
I’ll take them all to sing your praise
I reach out to feel you
And our fingers touch.
As long as you’re with me and by my side
I won’t ever worry much.
I don’t ever worry
I don’t ever worry
I don’t ever worry much.
I don’t ever worry
I don’t ever worry
I don’t ever worry much.
Some people hurry from day to day
But I don’t ever worry much.
I don’t have time to live that way
So I don’t ever worry much.
Creature of habit,
We gotta get out of town.
My next door neighbor thinks he’s got me locked down.
Creature of habit,
I’m just singing my song.
“I’m worried now, but I won’t be long”
I don’t ever worry
I don’t ever worry
I don’t ever worry much.
I don’t ever worry
I don’t ever worry
I don’t ever worry much.

Vacation
03:08
|
|||
Dead Sea for the holiday.
Whenever I look, you’re reading a book.
Like a feather on the freeway
Floats in between gravel and gasoline.
I don’t know how you make yourself at home.
I only worry everywhere I go.
I get turned backwards everywhere I go.
Grandfather’s for my birthday,
Rain on the lake; people can wait.
Thought I tried to get away
To a place I knew I could act like you
Nobody wants to turn and face themselves.
I’d rather try to be like someone else.
I get turned backwards watching someone else.
I don’t know how to make myself at home.
